European Council: The normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia is imperative

The European Council urgently considers the need for the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia, against the background of the tension that had been caused between the two countries.

At the same time, the Council favors the dialogue to achieve this goal, which can be facilitated by the European Union, under the leadership of the High Representative.

It is noted that the European Council welcomes the recent European proposal to put the relationship between Kosovo and Serbia on a new and sustainable basis, as a historic opportunity that both parties must take advantage of, among other things with the aim of implementing the European perspective.

In conclusion, the European Council urges Kosovo and Serbia to fully and unconditionally implement the obligations they committed to in the dialogue, including the agreements from 2013 and 2015 to create a Union/Community of municipalities with a Serbian majority.

The time of tension

It is recalled that, until the end of December, a tense situation prevailed in Northern Kosovo and Serbia, when Serbs, former police officers accused of participating in a terrorist act to prevent the deployment of a police force from Pristina, were arrested. After their arrest, their compatriots blocked roads with barricades in northern Kosovo as a sign of protest.
