Park City Olympian to Compete in Nordic World Cup in Finland

Park City’s Stephen Schumann will compete with the U.S. men’s Nordic team at the FIS World Cup event this weekend in Ruka, Finland.

The men’s Nordic combined and ski jumping teams will be sending four athletes, with the competition schedule for Nordic Combined (Nov. 23-26) here, and the competition schedule for Ski Jumping (Nov. 24-26) here.

Schumann grew up in Park City, Utah, and was a member of the Park City Ski and Snowboard Club. He first started ski jumping at the age of 5 and said he was immediately hooked. At the age of 7, he tried Nordic skiing, and never turned back.

Schumann was first named to the U.S. Nordic Combined National Team in 2016, where he immediately started to make an impact on the Continental Cup circuit. He represented the United States in Nordic Combined at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. In the 2022/23 season, Schumann scored individual World Cup points three times, placing 25th, 27th and 28th overall during the Seefeld Triple.

He recorded a new Summer Grand Prix personal best this summer, placing 19th overall in the HS105/10km SGP event in Oberwiesenthal on Aug. 26. He wrapped up his summer at the USA Nordic National Championships, placing third overall in the HS100/10km event.

Schumann graduated from the Park City Winter Sports School in 2017, and is now enrolled at Arizona State University.

Men’s Nordic Combined Preview
Ben LoomisGrant AndrewsNiklas Malacinski and Stephen Schumann will all represent the United States at the first Men’s Nordic Combined World Cup events of the season in Ruka, Finland.

Ben Loomis had a successful summer during the FIS Nordic Combined Summer Grand Prix circuit, earning a 12th place finishing during the HS137/10km SGP in Oberstdorf on Aug. 30, along with 16th (HS98/7.5km) and 20th place (HS98/10km) finishes during the SGP events in Villach from Sept. 2-3.

Loomis was then able to earn the title of national champion again at the USA Nordic National Championships in Lake Placid, placing first overall in the HS100/10km event.

Grant Andrews was able to record a new Summer Grand Prix personal best this summer as well, placing 26th overall during the SGP event in Oberwiesenthal on August 28th.

This summer, Niklas Malacinski competed at the Summer Grand Prix events in Oberstdorf and Villach. In Villach, Malacinski finished 41st in the HS98/7.5km SGP on Sept. 2, followed by a 36th place finish during the HS98/10km SGP on Sept. 3.

Malacinski then ended his summer with a secondplace finish in the HS100/10km event at USA Nordic National Championships, his first-ever National Championship podium.
