Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he has recently spoken with the Danish national team manager Kasper Hjulmund about midfielder Matt O’Riley. The 22-year-old has been terrific this season, and a senior Denmark call-up could be on the cards.
For the Scottish champions in 2023/24, O’Riley has been a standout. He has scored four goals and assisted a further two in just six games up to this point.
News of a potential debut for the treble-winner for the Danish senior team comes as no surprise, and his club gaffer Rodgers provided a ‘report’ to Hjulmund on him. The Irishman said when speaking to the press on Thursday: “I was talking to Kasper Hjulmund the Danish national manager, about him the other day. I was giving a report on him”
A first senior Denmark cap would only further increase O’Riley’s stock, which is already at a high level at the minute. Rodgers, however, still believes the player has to keep improving by continually doing what he is.
The 50-year-old also revealed that O’Riley is a completely different player within the club than what you would expect from the outside looking in. He said: “I was telling him that from the outside Matt is totally different from when you are inside working with him. So I just think he needs to keep doing what he is doing.”
If O’Riley continues his current form and upward trajectory, he could turn out to be one of his side’s greatest players this season. He has caught the eye of many so far in 2023/24, but there is still a long way to go and he must keep up with his eye-catching displays.
