Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that he believes his country will join the European Union after emerging victorious from its war with Russia.
“We are getting closer to the European Union. Ukraine will become a member of the European Union,” he said in a speech to the European Parliament in Brussels, calling his country “a winning Ukraine.”
Ukraine became a candidate for EU membership last June, but the process of joining the 27-member Union takes several years.
Zelensky said Kiev and its European partners were defending themselves against what he called a historic attack by Russia.
“Europe, we are defending ourselves against the biggest anti-European force in the modern world,” he said. “We, the Ukrainians, on the battlefield, with you.”
Zelensky also thanked Ukraine’s allies for the military and humanitarian aid they provided after Russia’s February 2022 invasion, which included airstrikes on the country’s critical infrastructure.
“Thank you to everyone who helps Ukraine with the necessary things: weapons and ammunition, energy equipment and fuel, thousands of things without which we could not succeed in the midst of total war,” said the Ukrainian president.
